Youths encouraged to pay it forward and stand up for what they believe in at nEbO Spirit of Youth Awards

- Acting Minister of Culture, Community and Youth Mr Lawrence Wong spoke to youth leaders at annual Spirit of Youth Awards

- nEbO reaffirms commitment to prepare youths to be Work-Ready and Life-Ready through initiatives in the upcoming year

It was a night of glitz and glamour at the Gardens by the Bay as the youth community of the Labour Movement recognised and awarded its youth leaders at the nEbO Spirit of Youth Awards 2014. The award ceremony was attended by Guest of Honour, Acting Minister for Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth Mr Lawrence Wong who encouraged the youths to inspire people and have a positive impact on society. In his speech to the youths, Acting Minister Mr Lawrence Wong also commented that he is glad that nEbO youths have found meaningful causes to stand for, which is indicative of Singaporean youths in general now.

Spirit of Youth Awards 2014

Some 550 youths and guests were present at the Spirit of Youth Awards this evening, an annual ceremony which recognises the admirable contributions of nEbO youths the past year. More than 100 events were organised over the past year, with about half of the events conceptualised and carried out by nEbO youths themselves. A total of five team Awards and five individual Awards were given out tonight, alongside partner awards to thank organizations for their support of nEbO initiatives throughout the year. (Please refer to Annex A for a list of Awards and winners)

One winner was the nEbO Ways In Sharing Happiness (W.I.S.H.) 2013 team which won the Team of Versatility award. The team organised a hugely successful nEbO W.I.S.H in 2013 where they collected some 10,000 food ration units from seven NTUC FairPrice outlets island-wide and mobilising 160 youth volunteers. This was a doubling of the number of youth volunteers from the 2012 edition and resulted in greater number of rations collected for needy individuals under the Shan You Counselling Centre. In the five years since it was started, nEbO W.I.S.H had given out more than 20,000 food items for the less fortunate and underprivileged families. In 2014, the format of nEbO W.I.S.H. was changed to become a month-long movement of “Doing Good” activities so that the nEbO youths could reach out to an even larger part of the society.

Reaffirming commitment to prepare youths to be Work-Ready

nEbO also took the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to prepare youths to be Work-Ready by honouring the team behind Thank Your Intern Day (TYID) with the Initiatives of Extraordinaire Award. The Award recognises a youth-initiated project which has a significant impact to the general public. The awareness campaign was launched in September 2013 and culminated in an event on 10 October 2013 where some 400 signatures from employers and interns were collected in support of a productive internship and a mutually beneficial relationship between employers and interns. nEbO and its youths hope to continue growing this movement and to pen it into the national calendar.

“Singaporean youths are exposed to a variety of social issues today and we can see that especially among our nEbO youths. They have matured from creating activities that impact our society to actively understanding the viewpoints of their peers and identifying issues that face youths and our society. Empowered by this knowledge, passion and dedication in what they believe in, nEbO youths have stepped up to make a difference and we are very proud of their achievements. Be it educating their peers on their rights as interns or as compassionate members giving back to the society, nEbO youths are equipped with the life skills to be Work-Ready, World-Ready and Life-Ready and we will continue providing platforms and opportunities for them to develop their individual potential,” said Ms Lim Kay Min, Deputy Director (Community Engagement & Membership), NTUC Club.

Annex B: Selected profiles

Young Achiever Awardee - Douglas Toh Zheng Xun, 16, Yishun Secondary School

Douglas was introduced to nEbO by one of the nEbO advisors back in 2012. A studious boy and a basketball enthusiast, you can either find him at a tuition center or at a court. But he did not expect himself to be so involved in doing good for the community.

One of his first events he participated was an event created by nEbO champion Danial Ayub Mansul who brought a group of children from low-income families for a day out at the Marina Barrage. From there, Douglas never looked back. With a love for doing good and under the guidance by nEbO Care Advisors, Douglas organised his very first care event, Junior Kids Day Out. At the age of 16, it is remarkable for a secondary school student to rally 30 over volunteers to take part in this event.

After witnessing how much the kids had enjoyed the event, Douglas took up the challenge and went on to organise his second event, Stash Your Trash. This time, he not only planned out the programme, but he went down to the venue for site recces and also planned out safety measures after his school.

A natural leader, he rallied his organising committee to recruit volunteers for the event and indeed his efforts paid off, and a total of 20 nEbO youth volunteers with 22 children from the Tampines Family Centre made this event a huge success.

EXCEL Awardee - Farah Erfina Bte Mohd, 22, Singapore Institute of Management

Farah’s passion for singing started when she was just a kid and her parents brought home a karaoke set. With a yearning to sing, Farah searched for opportunities to perform and she found it with nEbO.

Her first event was a performance at nEbO’s fourth Birthday Bash in July 2011 and from then on she never looked back. Through the years, Farah was given opportunities to showcase her singing talents and even represented nEbO at the World Youth Rally for 2012 and 2013.

But Farah did not just shine on the stage; she also spearheaded events for the community. In 2013, she organised a group of volunteers for a Music Caroling session at PERTAPIS Children’s Home to bring cheers to the kids there. She also initiated the What’s Your Dream event in 2013 to motivate and encourage youths to pursue their dreams and set long term goals and aspirations. This event successfully garnered more than 300 youths who pen down their dreams.
